President Lee Teng-hui this morning tells visiting British conservationist Jane Goodall that the Republic of China attaches great importance to the protection of wildlife and in particular the conservation of endangered species.
President Lee makes the remarks in meeting with this internationally-renowned primatologist. He also pays a personal respect to Dr. Goodall for spending most of her 35 years in the research of chimpanzees and for making public appearances around the globe in recent years to promote "Roots & Shoots," an education program for children.
During the meeting, Dr. Goodall explains in details her "Roots & Shoots" program to President Lee and also talks about the good impression she gains about the Republic of China during her week-long stay here.
Dr. Goodall is accompanied by Dr. Su Chi, Director-General of the Government Informationa Office, and Legislator Chao Yung-ching to the Office of the President for the meeting. Secretary-General Ding Mou-shih of the National Security Council and Deputy Secretary-General Stephen S.F. Chen of the Office of the President are also present.
