President Tsai meets American Veterans National Commander Jan Brown
2019-10-30

On the morning of October 30, President Tsai Ing-wen met with American Veterans (AMVETS) National Commander Jan Brown and her husband. She stated that she looked forward to seeing the assistance of AMVETS leading to better and closer ties between Taiwan and the United States, so that we can jointly contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

A translation of the president's remarks follows:

I want to welcome National Commander Jan Brown and her husband to Taiwan. I was pleased to learn that Commander Brown is the first female National Commander of AMVETS in its 75-year history. As a female politician myself, I feel very proud of Commander Brown's achievements.

The friendship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and AMVETS goes back many years. Taiwan's Veterans Affairs Council is a fraternal organization of AMVETS, and AMVETS invites the Council to send delegates to its National Convention each year.

Even more meaningful are the resolutions AMVETS frequently adopts expressing support for democratic development in the Republic of China (Taiwan), and for our participation in international affairs.

At its National Convention last year, AMVETS adopted Resolution 19-7, which once again encouraged China and Taiwan to engage in dialogue and avoid military conflict, and supports the continued promotion of educational and cultural relationships and exchanges between the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan). I want to thank AMVETS for its friendly and firm support.

Through ongoing interactions, we hope to better emulate the comprehensive care that the US offers to its military veterans as well as their family members and survivors. The way we care for our military veterans can also serve as a model for how we take care of senior citizens on a society-wide basis.

In recent years, as Taiwan has become an aged society, our Veterans Affairs Council has actively taken measures to support the government's Long-term Care 2.0 Plan. To name just one important example, the Council has coordinated with veterans hospitals and veterans homes to increase the availability of long-term care.

During this visit to Taiwan, in addition to taking part in our Veterans Day celebration, Commander Brown and her husband are also scheduled to visit Veterans General Hospital and other institutions. I firmly believe that through exchanges and dialogue, we can learn from each other's experiences and make further progress.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, and based on our accomplishments over the past 40 years, our countries are steadily deepening our bilateral relationship. I look forward to seeing the assistance of AMVETS leading to better and closer ties between Taiwan and the United States, so that we can jointly contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
