President Chen Meets with the Winners of the 12th Distinguished Medical Devotion Awards

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian thanked the winners of the 12th distinguished medical devotion awards Friday for their contributions to Taiwan.

The president said that their winning deeds reflect the true "Taiwan spirit," which he described as the spirit of not caring about fame and profit but unselfish contribution to benefit others. "This spirit provides the momentum behind Taiwan's continuous progress," Chen added.

He also expressed his highest respect and regards to the winners, especially two who hail from other countries but who have rooted themselves in Taiwan, for their years of service to the Taiwan people. He also took the opportunity to recognize those who are in medical field for their selfless work in providing health care and treating the sick. The president said that their selfless devotion serves as a fine example for the public.

The award, co-sponsored by the Department of Health, the Ming Sheng Daily, the Health, Welfare and Environment Council in the legislature and the Health, Welfare & Environmental Foundation, and Taipei City Government, provides recognition to those who devote their time and energy in the grass-roots and remote medical institutions around the island.

The winners are Yeh Hsiu-cheng, Chen Sung-chiang, Wang Lin Tien-ju, Chung Hsin-hsin, Hsiao Yu-ming, Kuo Chiu-chi, Ho Wu-chung, Han Liang-chun, Felice Chech, Petrin Giovanni, Juan Yu-mei and Wang Chin-mao. Chech and Giovanni are both from Italy and work with St. Mary's Hospital in Lotung, in northwestern Ilan County.
