President Tsai's remarks at state banquet hosted by Tuvalu Prime Minister Sopoaga

2017-11-01

When Prime Minister Sopoaga led a delegation to Taiwan in October, I told him I wanted to visit Tuvalu sometime soon. So today, less than a month later, I’m happy to be here with my friends. I want to thank Prime Minister Sopoaga and Mrs. Sopoaga for inviting me, and arranging such a sumptuous state banquet.

I have heard that the people of Tuvalu are natural musicians, and like to create both lyrics and melodies to commemorate important people and events. The last time Prime Minister Sopoaga visited Taiwan, he made a lasting impression during a state banquet by singing his own composition, entitled “Ode to Friendship Between Taiwan and Tuvalu." His fine singing voice and the friendly sentiments expressed were very touching.

In addition to official ties that date back almost 40 years, Taiwan and Tuvalu are also linked by a shared Austronesian cultural background. The languages of Taiwan's indigenous peoples are similar to the Tuvaluan language. The number "five," for example, is pronounced "lima" by Taiwan's Amis, Paiwan, and Puyuma peoples, which is the same in Tuvaluan.

The word "lima" also means "hand." I hope that these language links will spur Taiwan and Tuvalu to join hands in closer cooperation, so that that we can develop deeper and more comprehensive ties.

As Prime Minister Sopoaga said, "we are all in the same canoe." Taiwan and Tuvalu have supported and helped each other for many years, much like families do, weathering storms and overcoming difficulties together. Taiwan cherishes this exceptional friendship.

In the future, Taiwan and Tuvalu will continue working together to surmount the wind and waves, and make our canoe even stronger and more seaworthy for the voyage ahead. And finally, I want to raise a toast to the continued prosperity of Taiwan and Tuvalu, and our lasting friendship. Thank you.
