ROC government's position on mainland Chinese interference with Taiwan's participation in WHA
ROC government's position on mainland Chinese interference with Taiwan's participation in WHA
2017-05-22

The Republic of China is a sovereign state. Taiwan is not a province under the rule of the People's Republic of China, yet the mainland Chinese authorities continue, citing a variety of political pretexts, to exclude the 23 million people of Taiwan from the international health system. This, we cannot countenance, nor will we accept. Their illegitimate actions will cost them the support of the international community, and elicit extreme disgust among all the people of Taiwan.

Heath is a universal human right. Health and the prevention of disease transcend national borders. The World Health Organization (WHO) belongs to the whole world. It concerns itself with and serves the health of all mankind, not the political positions of a particular country. Taiwan is a member of the international community, and as such, its people are entitled to enjoy the same rights to good health as everyone else on Earth. We should be treated equally. There is no reason why we should be excluded. The truth of this principle is self-evident. Taiwan is resolutely determined to participate in and contribute to the international community, and our government is working actively toward that end. We will continue to promote and enhance cooperation with the proper authorities in other nations in order to ensure the rights of our people to good health.
