Steadfast diplomacy

Vice President Chen Chien-jen departed on the evening of September 2 to travel to the Holy See and attend the canonization of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. In remarks issued before boarding the aircraft, the vice president stressed that in addition to expressing to the Holy See our congratulations on the canonization of Mother Teresa, the trip was also being undertaken in order to pray for lasting friendship between Taiwan and the Vatican.

Vice President Chen Chien-jen completed his visit to the Dominican Republic and returned to Taiwan in the early morning hours of August 20, delivering remarks at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to report on successes achieved during his trip.

On the morning of August 17 (evening of August 17, Taipei time), Vice President Chen Chien-jen went to the National Palace of the Dominican Republic to meet with President Danilo Medina and pay a courtesy call on Vice President Margarita Maria Cedeno Lizardo. In addition to exchanging views with his hosts on bilateral relations and the prospects for future cooperation, Vice President Chen also invited each of the two leaders to visit Taiwan at a time of their convenience.

On the morning of August 16 (evening of August 16, Taipei time), Vice President Chen Chien-jen and his wife proceeded to the Congress of the Dominican Republic to attend the inauguration of the Dominican Republic president and vice president. Escorted by a congressional protocol official, Vice President and Mrs. Chen received military honors as they walked toward the Palace of Congress, then entered the office of the Senate President for a brief rest and a chance to exchange greetings with heads of state and special emissaries from other countries attending the ceremony. Prior to commencement of the ceremony, they entered the congressional chamber.

At 3:00 p.m. on August 15 (3:00 a.m. on August 16, Taipei time), Vice President Chen Chien-jen and his wife toured the Center for Comprehensive Care for the Disabled in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo. They were escorted on their tour by First Lady Candida Montilla de Medina, and received flowers from two children.

Vice President Chen Chien-jen departed on the evening of August 13 on a trip to the Dominican Republic to take part in that country's presidential inauguration ceremony. In remarks issued before boarding the aircraft, the vice president stressed that during this trip he will seek to call attention to Taiwan's concept of "steadfast diplomacy" to strengthen mutual assistance for mutual benefits.

On the morning of July 27, President Tsai Ing-wen accepted the credentials of the new Republic of Nauru Ambassador to the ROC Chitra Jeremiah in a ceremony at the Presidential Office. The president warmly welcomed Ambassador Jeremiah to her new post in Taiwan and called for enhanced cooperation and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

During a meeting on the morning of July 25 with a delegation led by Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and his wife, President Tsai Ing-wen briefed her visitors on the state of bilateral ties between Taiwan and the Solomon Islands, and expressed hope that the two countries can continue to enhance their relationship and maintain a lasting alliance.

Upon arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the president issued a public statement, explaining the achievements and benefits of the trip, and emphasizing that the government will continue its efforts to bring Taiwan closer to the world.
