President Lee Meets with Haitian Congressional Delegation
1997-03-05

President Lee Teng-hui this morning meets with Mr. Kely C. Bastien, speaker of Haiti's Chamber of Deputies, and his congressional colleagues.

During the meeting, President Lee extends his warm welcome to the visitors and exchanges views with them on matters of mutual concern.

The President says that, whatever the international situations have been in the past decades, the Republic of China has always treated other countries with sincerity and done her utmost to reciprocate for what she had received from the international community in the early years. "This sincerity, like the good wine, is worth treasuring," he notes.

Summing up his impression on the ROC, Speaker Bastien says that this visit has enabled him to gain a better understanding of the ROC's progress in every aspect, and that the ROC serves as a model for Haiti to learn from. He also points out that the relations between the two countries, based on close governmental friendship, could be further consolidated by even more people-to-people exchanges.

Accompanied by ROC Vice Foreign Minister C. J. Chen and the Haitian ambassador to the ROC, Mr. Sonny Seraphin, the Bastien-led delegation come to the Office of the President to pay a courtesy call. Also present are Dr. Ding Mou-shih, secretary-general of the ROC National Security Council, and Mr. Stephen S. F. Chen, deputy secretary-general to the President.
