President Lee Meets with President of Canada's Victoria University
1997-04-15

President Lee Teng-hui this morning met with three visitors from Canada--President David Strong, Prof. Roger N. Wolff and Prof. Kenneth Keng of the Victoria University. During the meeting, President Lee extended his hearty welcome to the guests and exchanged views on education with them.

President Lee said that, many years ago, ROC students liked to go to Japan and the U.S.A. for advanced studies. Afterwards, he noted, because the income of the people in Taiwan has increased and the society has become pluralistic, Japan and the U.S.A. have no longer been their only choices for studying abroad. "Encouraging students to study abroad is a very good way for the ROC to enhance exchanges with other countries," he added.

President Lee also told his guests that the ROC government is now implementing educational reform, and the blue print has been completed. "The related authorities will make the best use of the limited resources to improve the primary, secondary, higher and social education," said the President.

Deeply impressed by the current education of the ROC, Dr. Strong expressed his hope to encourage more students of this country to go to Canada for advanced studies, and to increase academic exchanges between the two countries.

The Victoria University, a synthetic university in Canada, has several cooperative programs with the National Sun Yat-Sen University and the National Taiwan University, its two sister universities in Taiwan.

Accompanied by ROC Education Minister Wu Jin and Director Hugh Stephens of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the guests came to the Office of the President for the meeting. Also present was Dr. Huang Kun-huei, secretary-general to the President.
