President Lee Meets with Chinese-American Scientist Taylor Wang
1997-04-25

President Lee Teng-hui this morning met with Dr. Taylor Wang, an outstanding Chinese-American scientist. During the meeting, President Lee extended a cordial welcome to Dr. Wang and exchanged views with him on Taiwan's scientific and technological development.

President Lee told Dr. Wang that industrial development must be closely linked with science and technology because sci-tech breakthroughs can point to new dimensions for industrial development. To sustain their continuous growth, Taiwan's industries should have forward-looking vision and pay much attention to research and development, added the President.

"Scientific researches must be practical and realistic. We can build up a hypothesis boldly but should prove it carefully. A testfied case study can always be applied to other fields," President Lee pointed out.

President Lee stressed that human beings still play a central role in the development and application of science and technology. Therefore, the ROC should promote spiritual reengineering while pushing for political and economic reforms so as to build a peaceful and harmonious society, noted the President.

Dr. Wang, who conducted scientific research on board the US space shuttle Challenger in 1985, visits Taiwan this time to deliver a speech about his ongoing research on "living cell microcapsules."

Accompanied by Chairman Liu Chao-shiuan of the ROC National Science Council, Dr. Wang came to the Office of the President for the meeting. Dr. Huang Kun-huei, secretary-general to the President, was also present.
