President Lee Teng-hui this afternoon met with President Denise Bradley and Vice President Ian Elliot Davey of the University of South Australia, and extended his warm welcome to them.
During the meeting, President Lee told his guests that the Republic of China is currently committed to a series of reform programs including educational, judiciary, administrative and spiritual reforms, in the hope of establishing the ROC as a genuinely modernized nation.
Since President Bradley is an expert on women's rights and education in Australia, President Lee exchanged views with her particularly on the democratic development and educational reform in this country. To respect human rights and humanistic development is something universal, and the government's duties are to enhance the welfare of the people, President Lee noted.
President Bradley told President Lee that she would take advantage of this visit to further exchanges and cooperation with National Taiwan University, National Chengkung University, National Chunghsing University and National Chiaotung University.
The Australian educators were accompanied by ROC Vice Education Minister Yang Kuo-shih to the Office of the President for the meeting. Also present were Dr. Ding Mou-shih, secretary-general of the ROC National Security Council, and Mr. Stephen S.F. Chen, deputy secretary-general to the President.
