President Lee Teng-hui this morning received credentials presented by H. E. Enele Sopoaga, the new ambassador of Tuvalu to the Republic of China.
Accompanied by Director John Feng of the ROC Foreign Ministry's Protocol Department, Ambassador Sopoaga came to the Office of the President where the ceremony was held. Dr. Huang Kun-huei, secretary-general to the President, and ROC Foreign Minister John Chang were also present.
After the ceremony, on behalf of the government and the people of the ROC, President Lee extended his warm welcome to Ambassador Sopoaga and hoped the latter will further promote bilateral ties between the two countries.
President Lee pointed out that the ROC has maintained friendly relations with Tuvalu for many years. At the same time, the President also expressed his appreciation for Tuvalu's longtime support for the ROC in the international community.
President Lee said the ROC hopes to strengthen fishery cooperation with Tuvalu for promoting the welfare of both peoples.
At the end, President Lee hoped Ambassador Sopoaga would take time to visit Taiwan's fishery ports in Kaohsiung and Pingtung during his stay in Taiwan and help enhance fishery cooperation between the two countries.
For his part, Ambassador Sopoaga told President Lee that he feels proud to accept this new assignment, adding that he will spare no efforts at promoting bilateral cooperation and exchanges.
