President Lee Teng-hui this morning received Governor George Allen of the State of Florida, U.S. A., and extended a warm welcome to him.
The President said that Taiwan province and the State of Florida signed a sistership agreement in 1981 and, on this sound basis, the ROC and Florida can further enhance their relations particularly in the trade, economic and investment fields in order to benefit people on both sides.
President Lee also urged Governor Allen to take the opportunity of his visit here to have more contacts with local business leaders and facilitate mutual understanding so that trade and economic ties can be strengthened in future.
Governor Allen, who was on his first visit to Taiwan, said that he was deeply impressed by the progress and prospeirty of the ROC and that he would do his best to promote even closer cooperation and exchange and enhance mutual friendship between both sides.
The American governor was accompanied by ROC Vice Foreign Minister Chen Chien-jen to the Office of the President for the meeting. Also present were Dr. Ding Mou-shih, secretary-general of the ROC National Security, and Mr. Stephen S.F. Chen, deputy secretary-general to the President.
