2003-08-07

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) The government has worked hard to improve Taiwan's investment environment and has succeeded judging by the increased amount of foreign investment expected to flow into the country this year, President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday.

Speaking at the annual conference of the textile industry, the president said the country has attracted NT$649 billion (US$15.58 billion) in foreign investment in the first half of this year. This validates the confidence of foreign investors in Taiwan's economic potential.

Furthermore, the president said, his administration is pushing for new programs to cut the cost of land in local industrial zones, and moving to speed up cross-strait shipping times in the absence of direct shipping links. All of these will make Taiwan a more attractive place for foreign investment, Chen said.
