President Lee Attends Special Entertainment Show for Returning Overseas Chinese
1998-10-09

President Lee Teng-hui attended, this evening, a special entertainment show for overseas Chinese returning to the Republic of China to participate in its 1998 National Day celebrations, and delivered an address which follows:

It is very touching indeed to see so many overseas Chinese returning to the Republic of China and gathering here on the eve of its National Day in celebration of the republic's 87th birthday. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my hearty welcome and admiration to all of you.

Overseas Chinese have consistently played a crucial role in the history of the establishment and development of this republic. They have been an important force which has helped propel this country toward freedom, democracy and prosperity.

Despite the insufficiency of many resources, we have devoted ourselves to economic development over the past half century, and have created a world-recognized "economic miracle," becoming a major economic player in the international community. Furthermore, the successful constitutional reform during the last decade has realized the "popular governance" ideal of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, our founding father, adding a fresh force to the world's democratic camp. As the new century is drawing near, we have also committed ourselves to reengineering our government and improving our overall national strength, in the hope of gaining a leading position in the midst of fierce international competition. The goal being pursued by the Republic of China on Taiwan, I believe, coincides with the expectations of all overseas Chinese. That is, to pursue and build a new China, which is prosperous, strong, democratic and dignified and will contribute considerably to human culture and world peace.

The significant achievement of the ROC on Taiwan in implementing democracy and free market economy has also served as a grand blueprint for the future development of the entire Chinese people. We hope that the Peking authorities will realize the desire of our mainland compatriots to pursue freedom and democracy, will promote democratization and thereby gradually narrow the gap between the two systems. By so doing, they can adapt themselves to the trend of the times and create favorable conditions for the democratic and peaceful reunification of China in the future.

In our own hands, my dear overseas compatriots, lies the destiny of the Republic of China. In the future, the government will make greater efforts to enhance its services to you and assist in resolving your economic, business, cultural and educational problems. Meanwhile, I hope that you will continue your support for the government and join hands with your countrymen here to create an even brighter, and more glorious new era for the Republic of China.

In closing, I wish the Republic of China continued prosperity and each of you happiness and good health. Thank you.
