1999-09-06

Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) Vice President Lien Chan on Monday hosted a welcome reception for the presidents of Central American countries attending the second ROC and Central American Countries Summit scheduled to open in Taipei on Tuesday.

Local officials invited to the reception included Premier Vincent Siew, President of the Examination Yuan Hsu Shui-teh, and President of the Judicial Yuan Weng Yueh-sheng.

Members of the diplomatic corps in Taipei and members of the entourages of the various Central American heads of state were also invited.

Speaking at the reception, Lien said he hoped the friendly countries will continue to support the ROC's bid to enter international organizations.

He pointed out that the 2.2 million people of Taiwan should have the right to participate in international activities, and that the country has the capacity to contribute to these international organizations by promoting world peace.

Honduran President Carlos Flores responded on behalf of all the Central American guests by reiterating that the ROC has every right to take part in international organizations, including the United Nations. The ROC's membership of international organizations should be an inalienable right.

After the presidents of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador left the reception, Foreign Minister Jason Hu presided over a Karaoke party to entertain his Central American counterparts and other guests.
