Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) President Lee Teng-hui on Monday met with Salvadoran President Francisco Flores to exchange views on how to strengthen bilateral relations between the Republic of China and El Salvador.

Lee told his Salvadoran counterpart that high-tech agricultural development is the key point of the ROC's current agricultural development, with flower and fruit cultivation gradually replacing rice and sugar to become the ROC's main export items in this area.

Lee said that the ROC is willing to share its agricultural development experience with friendly countries.

Speaking on his recent redefinition of the cross-Taiwan Strait relationship as a "special state-state relationship," Lee noted that he was just stating facts so as to clarify and ensure that the two sides of the strait can negotiate on an equal footing.

"Our policy toward mainland China remains unchanged and continued interchange and dialogue between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is still our position. We will strengthen mutual interchange in the future so as to peacefully resolve our common issues," he stressed.

Flores in return said that he is deeply impressed by the dynamic and active ROC society, and that the ROC's economic development experience is a model for developing countries to follow.

He said he believes that through concerted efforts bilateral relations will be further enhanced.

Later in the day, Lee received Costa Rican First Vice President Astrid Fischel. Fischel headed a Costa Rican delegation to take part in the second ROC and Central American Countries Summit scheduled to open in Taipei on Tuesday.

Lee pointed out that relations among the countries of Central America are closely related, and that the summit, held alternately in Taipei and various Central American capitals every two years, will greatly help the development of the Central American region.

He said that the ROC is willing to share its economic development experience with Costa Rica in the hope that the two countries will strengthen interchanges in all fields to boost the social welfare of the people of the two countries.
