Eulogy at the National Commemoration for the Victims of the 9-21 Earthquake by Vice President Lien
1999-10-11

We will never forget 1:47 A.M., September 21, 1999, when a dreadful earthquake ravaged our homeland and deprived us of our friends and relatives. Today, on the morning of October 11, we bid farewell to our 2,312 compatriots, brothers and sisters, friends and children, both known and unknown.

The dreadful earthquake in the dark hours of the night tore apart our land and homes, taking the lives of our loved ones.

In the unending stream of tears, the whole nation was plunged into the deepest sorrow. Wherever you may be at this moment, we hope you are no longer afraid, no longer fearful.

We hope you recognize the way home, even though homes may no longer look the same.

We hope you have met your loved ones, even though what you saw may be their tearful faces and their deepest sorrow.

Although we cannot see you, we continue to feel your existence, living on in our hearts.
