Taipei, Nov. 14 (CNA) President Lee Teng-hui gave a banquet at his home Sunday evening in honor of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara and his three-member entourage.
During the banquet, Lee expressed his gratitude to the people and government of Japan for their kindness in helping the victims of a devastating earthquake that hit central Taiwan on September 21. Japan has donated cash and prefabricated housing units, and sent rescue teams to help the earthquake victims. Lee also thanked them for sharing their valuable experience in fighting natural disasters with Taiwan.
Lee said the earthquake has done a lot of damage, "but we have confidence and ability to rise up again."
Ishihara said the purpose of his visit to Taiwan is to show his concern for the earthquake victims and see whether he can do more to help them. This is why he is accompanied by city planning and architectural officials on the trip, he said. He arrived here Saturday at the invitation of President Lee.
Ishihara said Taiwan is a neighboring country of Japan. When neighbors are hurt by a devastating disaster, it is only natural to help them, he said.
"It would be nice if we can give some advice and assistance for the reconstruction of the earthquake-stricken areas," said Ishihara, who is the highest Japanese politician to visit Taiwan since the two countries severed diplomatic relations in 1972.
He had visited part of an earthquake-stricken area in central Taiwan and met with Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou before he called on President Lee Sunday evening.
