President Lee's Address to the Sixth Congress of the National Business Executives Forum
1999-11-25

I am delighted to join you for the opening of the Sixth Congress of National Business Executives Forum.

Here today are important business executives, who have not only made significant contributions to the economic development of our nation, but have also shown great concern for the future of our national development. Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude for your contributions and call your attention to some issues of national development.

Since becoming president of the Republic of China, I have continually given thought to the survival and development of the nation. Over the past decade or so, we have made many concrete achievements in democratic reforms, cross-strait exchanges, and pragmatic diplomacy, while maintaining economic stability and growth. These accomplishments have not only received the acclaim of the international community, but have also opened an impressive era of national development.

As president, all my administrative policies are based on considerations of national security and the people's welfare, which in turn have national survival and development as their prerequisites. As explained in my book The Road to Democracy,"Taiwan's future hinges on Taiwan's existence; Taiwan's existence opens Taiwan's future." Only in existence is there hope.
