2000-06-10

Tainan, June 10 (CNA) Republic of China President Chen Shui-bian on Saturday attended the commencement of National Cheng Kung University in southern Taiwan and urged the graduates to become successful trouble-shooters.

He said that he came to the commencement to share the joy of the graduates and to extend his appreciation to the university for the acception of the university's president, Weng Cheng-yi, to serve as National Science Council chairman in the new ROC government.

Chen quoted a recent "Commonwealth" magazine survey of 100 major local enterprises that found that Cheng Kung University graduates were the most sought after graduates by the enterprises.

He thus praised the university's achievements and urged the graduates to pursue further success based on the already-established reputation.

Chen said that success does not mean defeating others, but surpassing oneself, and added that all people must be well prepared for the 21st century so as to win a seat for Taiwan in the international community.
