President Chen Repeats Call for Cross-strait Talks
2000-06-13

Taipei, June 13 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Tuesday said that his administration is willing to engage in dialogue with mainland China on the basis of equality, democracy and goodwill.

Chen made the remarks at a tea party he hosted jointly with Vice President Annette Lu in honor of the envoys of countries that have no diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Chen said that his administration will pool the strengths of the public and private sectors to launch "all dimensions" diplomacy to enhance exchanges and cooperation with countries around the world and to take part in international organizations and activities.

He thanked the envoys for their contributions to promoting friendly ties between their home countries and Taiwan.

He also expressed regret that the ROC, despite being a democratic country and a free economy, has not been allowed to give its full feedback to the international community due to the continual blockade of the country by mainland China, and he called for more international support for Taiwan.

Around 60 foreign representatives, including Raymond Burghardt, director of the Taipei office of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), attended the party.
