Vice President Lu Receives South African Ombudsman
2000-08-07

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu expressed the hope to a visiting South African ombudsman on Monday that ombudsmen agencies between the two nations could increase cooperation and exchanges.

Lu made the remarks when he received Selby Baqwa, South African National Public Protector, at the Presidential Office.

Lu also wished success for the 7th conference of International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), which is scheduled to be held in Durban, South Africa in late October this year. The meeting is held every four years.

Baqwa said Taiwan's democratic development and economic liberalization is well-known in South Africa. He added that he was glad to have experienced it and exchanged views with the Control Yuan, the ROC's highest watchdog body.

Lu told the South African visitor that she has long been concerned with political democratization, human rights protection and the rights of women. She added that the political and economic development of the island has been the result of the long-term efforts of its people, with women playing a vital role, especially in the economic sphere.

She noted that women now comprise one-fourth of the members of the Cabinet. More women will go to the politics in the future, she said, adding that this will be a good development.
