Taipei, July 26 (CNA) The Taiwan people believe that what mainland China really means by its "one country, two systems" formula for unification with Taiwan is that Beijing would rule Taiwan under its system of totalitarianism and oppression, President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday.
In his address to the 30th annual conference of The World Federation of Taiwanese Associations via video link, Chen said the demonstration of 500,000 Hong Kong people on July 1 to protest the proposed enactment of a state security law, and Beijing's arrogant opposition to Taiwan's admission to the World Health Organization have enhanced the Taiwan people's belief that the formula is totally unacceptable.
Chen also said that the holding of referendums is essential to the development of democracy in Taiwan and expressed his full confidence in the country's ability to hold them successfully.
