Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian returned to Taiwan Friday after a 12-day, six-state journey of friendship aimed at bolstering the Republic of China's relations with its diplomatic allies.
Upon stepping on the soil of Taiwan, Chen flew to central Taiwan to inspect damage caused by a strong typhoon that swept over the island Tuesday through early Wednesday.
Chen toured several Nantou County townships which were affected by typhoon Bilis. Eight orchard workers in the county's Jenai village were buried alive by an avalanche triggered by the storm Tuesday night.
With the concerted efforts of our people, Chen is confident in recovering from the ordeal of this earthquake.
