Vice President Lu Attends a Forum on the Digital Entertainment Industry
2003-07-21

Taipei, July 21 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu said Monday that the development of the digital content industry should also take moral values into consideration.

The vice president made the remarks when she attended a forum on the digital entertainment industry sponsored by the semi-official China External Trade Development Council.

Lu noted that the government's "two-trillion, twin-star" project is one of its top priorities and that the digital content sector is an emerging industry like the biotech and high-tech industries.

The "two-trillion" refers to estimates that the production value of the semiconductor and imaging industries will each reach one trillion new Taiwan dollars, while "twin-star" refers to the biotech and digital content industries.

Lu said that she visited an Internet cafe to find out why they are so popular and discovered the attraction as well as the deficiencies. She claimed that some digital content stresses the ends without considering the means and causes users to lose touch with reality.

She further claimed that if the digital content industry fails to take moral values into consideration, "it will not bring happiness to mankind."

She also said that if entertainment poisons the mind, it could trigger more serious problems and she added that the nurturing of moral values is still important in this hi-tech age.
