President Chen Presents Flags to Chinese Taipei Olympic Team

Kaohsiung, Sept. 7 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Thursday presented the Chinese Taipei team for the 2000 Olympic Games with a Republic of China national flag and a Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee flag.

The flag-presentation ceremony was held at the Tsoying Training Center in the southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung. Huang Ta-chou, chairman of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, received the flags on behalf of the team.

In an address to the athletes and officials set to travel to Sydney, Chen encouraged them to give full rein to the sporting spirit and to bring back more medals than it garnered at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok.

The Chinese Taipei delegation for the games which begin on Sept. 15, comprises 275 members, 56 of whom are athletes who will be competing in 13 events, with Taekwondo, weightlifting, table tennis and badminton offering the brightest medal hopes.
