2000-10-05

Taipei, Oct. 5 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian thanked Grenadian Prime Minister Keith Mitchell Thursday for the Caribbean nation's support of the ROC's bid to join various international organizations such as the World Health Organization.

Chen also thanked Mitchell for Grenada's voicing of support for the ROC in the U.N., describing Mitchell as a leader with "one of the world's greatest senses of justice." Chen added that he is touched by such unwavering friendship.

He noted that the two countries have remained close since establishing diplomatic relations 11 years ago and that high-ranking government officials exchange frequent visits. This being Mitchell's fifth visit to Taiwan, Chen added that Mitchell should be able to notice Taiwan's progress and development.

Mitchell, who is in Taiwan to attend ROC National Day celebrations on Oct. 10, exchanged opinions with Chen on issues related to the Caribbean region and urged the ROC to strengthen cooperative relations with the region.

Chen assured Mitchell that all the cooperative projects and agreements between the two countries will not be affected under his new administration because Taiwan's policies have a sense of continuity, irrespective of any Cabinet reshuffles.

He added that he hopes to further improve bilateral trade and economic cooperative relations so as to bring about even closer mutual friendship.
