Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu Sunday urged the people of Taiwan to take substantial action by sponsoring impoverished children in Latin America to help cement ties with the ROC's allies in the region.
Lu made the remarks while speaking about her recent visit to four Central American countries at the Kiwanis International ROC district 27th Summit Convention in central Taiwan's Shalu township, Taichung County.
Lu said that during her visit to El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala, the media in those countries had reported prominently of her visit, showing the importance those countries attached to her visit.
She pointed out that she will also launch a campaign for the sponsoring of 10,000 impoverished children in Latin America, saying she believes love is inexhaustible. She expressed the hope that members of Kiwanis International could pool their resources to help the nation gain more diplomatic allies during the four-year term of the administration under President Chen Shui-bian.
She also said that Taiwan's annual per capita income surge from US$100 to US$14,000 over the past five decades could be attributed to five factors: human rights on the island, total democratization, peace, love, and the island's development of technology.
