Taipei, Oct. 26 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian spoke highly of the contributions of the World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD) to promoting freedom and the universal values of democracy over the years in every corner of the world.
Chen went on to describe the ROC as a free and democratic country whose people uphold freedom and "love" democracy. The people enjoy 100 percent freedom of speech that allows them to voice criticism of the government and even the president, he said.
Chen said that the ROC is "a member of the global village" and that ROC citizens are also global citizens. "We (the ROC) will not raise fences for ourselves and hope that we can rejoin the United Nations so that we can fulfill our international obligations," he continued. He added his hope that the WLFD can help the ROC rejoin the United Nations.
