2000-11-02

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian Thursday accepted Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's apology for his government's recent mistakes in handling relations with the Republic of China.

President Chen also told Sogavare that the two countries should be forward-looking and forget their all past misunderstanding and unpleasant memories in order to promote further bilateral cooperation.

Noting that the ROC highly cherishes its relations with the Solomon Islands, Chen said he is convinced that relations between the two countries will become even closer and firmer in the future.

During their meeting at the Presidential Office, Chen expressed his hope that the Solomon Islands will no longer harbor any illusion about mainland China.

"Our 18-year-old relationship should not be divided or sabotaged by ill-motivated temptations or divisive tricks," Chen urged. He went on to say that his administration is willing to continue cooperation with the Solomon Islands based on the existing foundations in line with the principle of maintaining continuity and stability in its diplomatic policy.

Chen assured Sogavare that the ROC government will continue carrying out all the treaties, agreements and cooperative programs the two countries agreed upon in the past to help the South Pacific island nation.

For his part, Sogavare said his country will honor all of its commitments to Taiwan and will continue rendering full support for the ROC's bid to join major international organizations and activities.

Sogavare further said both the Solomon Islands' government and opposition camp attach great importance to relations with the ROC. He also attributed progress in resolving his country's recent internal political turmoil to ROC's support and assistance.
