Presidential Office Secretary-General Yu Shyi-kun's Statement on the Clashes Triggered by the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant
2000-11-03

Taipei, Nov. 3 (CNA) Presidential Office Secretary-General Yu Shyi-kun said Friday that the government is against any form of violence, and again urged the opposition and the ruling camps to work out their differences through negotiation.

Yu said Chen does not want to see "rivalry or even polarization in society (over the political storm unleashed by the halting of construction of the fourth nuclear power plant), and any form of violence for whatever reason will not be tolerated by the government."

He also urged the opposition parties to return to the negotiating table, saying that they should not shut the door on consultations that would be the best way to defuse the situation.
