Yu Shyi-kun Makes the Remarks on the Meeting of Heads of Opposition Parties
2000-11-11

Taipei, Nov. 11 (CNA) Secretary-General to the President Yu Shyi-kun said Saturday that he will call on the heads of the three major opposition parties shortly to discuss the substance of their talks earlier in the day.

Yu said that the government attaches great importance to the suggestions reached by the three leaders, and that he would like to discuss the topics with them, especially cross-strait relations --which the trio described as "stark" -- and the constitutional system.

In a Saturday press release, the Presidential Office was highly positive of the concerns expressed by the opposition parties, saying that the president believes a strong opposition will provide the best check and balance mechanism against the government. The public hopes for a national reconciliation, not rivalry, while the president hopes to have further communication and coordination with the opposition parties.
