2003-09-08

Taipei, Sept. 8 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian expressed appreciation Monday to Chad Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Nagoum Yamassoum for supporting the Republic of China in its bid to join the United Nations.

Chen welcomed Yamassoum on his third visit to Taiwan and lauded him as an outstanding politician who has served in many important positions in his country.

The president noted that Yamassoum has represented Chad President Idriss Deby three times at the United Nations General Assembly, spoke up for the ROC and will again speak up for Taiwan's cause this year at the U.N. General Assembly.

He also expressed his concern about the health of Deby, who is recovering after medical treatment.

Chen recalled that he chose to visit Chad in August 2000 during his first overseas trip since assuming the presidency and that Deby paid a reciprocal visit the following March.

The president also said that he was gratified to see that Taiwan's medical and technical assistance missions are doing well in Chad and he expressed the hope that bilateral relations will be further enhanced.
