President Chen Meets with Representatives from the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families
2003-09-09

Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Tuesday praised the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families -- one of the most well known charity organizations in Taiwan -- as a social role model for people to emulate.

Chen said the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families has endeavored to help orphans and broken families over the past two decades based on the four principles of loving care, Christian love, prompt relief and assistance, and professional expertise.

Having served more than 120,000 children and helped them to lead normal lives, the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families is a good example of cooperation between the government and the private sector, Chen noted.

The president made the remarks during an audience at the Presidential Office for staff members of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families.

The charity organization, originally established in Taiwan by a group of private philanthropists from the United States, has helped orphans find new homes and helped abused children to be resettled in safer environments through its "antennae" which reaches far and wide and through its diverse and sophisticated operational network, Chen said.

The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families became a completely Taiwan-financed organization in 1985.

With its operations continuing to get larger, Chen said, the charity organization has expanded abroad in recent years to help foreign orphans or childen from poor families to be adopted by Taiwan parents or find foster homes on the island.

The Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, as well as other major charity organizations such as World Vision Taiwan and the Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, have commendably spread Taiwan's love to people in every corner of the world, Chen said.
