2003-09-10

Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian exhorted a group of new military cadets to enrich themselves with knowledge to become the most outstanding servicemen of the Republic of China.

Chen spoke while presiding over a ceremony marking the completion of military training for new cadets from six military schools in the three military branches on the campus of the Chinese Military Academy in his capacity as the supreme leader of the ROC armed forces. Vice President Annette Lu was also present at the ceremony. "By enhancing your academic and military learning over the following years while studying in the military academies, I am confident that you will become prominent servicemen, " the head of state said.

To help all the new military cadets expand their knowledge, Chen recommended they read two well-known books: one introduces military careers of four famous contemporary U.S. generals and talks about how to become an outstanding military leader, while the other discusses requisites and the appropriate character for military leaders.

Noting that the two books touch on various leadership-related skills, Chen said that they would be of great help to all the new cadets' academic and military learning.

Quoting the authors of the two books, Chen noted that an excellent military leader must be upright and honest, determined in making policies, and considerate towards his inferiors, in addition to having professional knowledge, bravery and wisdom.
