2003-09-11

Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian declared confidently Thursday that the island's railway service will not be disrupted during the Lunar New Year holiday, despite threatened strike action by railway workers.

Speaking at a Mid-Autumn festival party in front of the square of the Presidential Office, the president said that according to Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Ling-san, the industrial disputes for which the railway workers' trade union voted to strike can be resolved.

Chen said he was worried about a threat of a Thursday walkout by railway workers and was glad to see that the trains ran on schedule. He thanked the railway workers for not following through on their threats and for reporting to work.

The president then mingled with the public at the party, which featured performances by famous signers, as well as a fireworks display.
