2003-09-17

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Wednesday that his administration has been working to build Taiwan into a "green silicon island" with a knowledge-base economy and advanced development in high technology.

Chen made the remarks while addressing a dinner party for the organizers of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) hosted in honor of all meeting participants at the Grand Hotel in Taipei. "To cope with the global trend toward digitalization," Chen said, "the Republic of China government has been promoting an 'e-Taiwan plan' by combining and utilizing information, Internet and communication technologies. "High technologies are closely related to the development of various industries while automation is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge, " Chen noted. "Robots have not only been used in various sectors but are also expected to become helpers in our daily life."

According to ICRA organizers, more than 1,000 representatives from 50-odd countries arrived in Taipei to participate in the event. A total of 1,179 theses will be presented by domestic and foreign academics and experts during the conference, which opened Sept. 14 and will run through Sept. 19.
