2003-10-06

Taipei, Oct. 6 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian encouraged government officials Monday to improve their service quality.

Addressing the ceremony of the fifth Service Quality Awards of the Executive Yuan and the 2003 Administrative Agencies' Web Site Awards, Chen said that the improvement of governmental services is one of the indicators of a country's social and economic development and a test of the government's dynamism.

Improving the quality of services represents not only the progress made by the government in administration but also fulfills the government's promises to the public, he said.

The nation's competitiveness requires administrative efficiency and service quality, Chen noted, adding that the four principles of creation and innovation, speed, value and progressiveness that constitute the core values of a knowledge-based economy can also be applied to government administration in order to improve its efficiency and service quality.

Only when government administrative efficiency and service quality is improved can the overall national competitiveness be increased and the expectations and demands of the public be met satisfactorily, Chen said.

He congratulated the award winners for their achievements and encouraged them to make more efforts to further improve their services to the public.
