President Chen Signs a Communiqué with Malawi President Bakili Muluzi

Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian signed a communiqué with visiting Malawi President Bakili Muluzi in Taipei Sunday.

In the communiqué, both leaders agree that all countries in the world should sort out their internal and international differences through dialogue on the basis of equality and respect for each other's sovereignty and independence.

The two leaders pledged on behalf of their countries to cooperate with each other.

Chen thanked Muluzi and his administration for their firm support for Taiwan's bids to join in the United Nations and World Trade Organization. 

Noting that the states in southern Africa are forming a Southern African Development Community, Chen said in the communiqué that he hopes Muluzi will exercise his personal influence to encourage states is southern Africa to better understand Taiwan.

For his part, Muluzi said he shares Chen's beliefs in democracy, the rule of law and the respect for human rights, adding that his country speaks out for Taiwan in the international community because he believe the voices of Taiwan's 23 million people should not be ignored by the international community.

He reaffirmed his country's support for the Republic of China in its bids to join the United Nations and other international organizations, saying that Taiwan can contribute significantly to world peace, and international prosperity and economy if it is admitted to these organizations.

Both leaders said they have exchanged views on broad issues and vowed to continue their close cooperation to promote peace and prosperity in Asia, Africa and the rests of the world.

The communiqué said Muluzi invited Chen to visit Malawi at a convenient time and Chen accepted it.
