President Chen Meets with Terry McAuliffe, Chairman of the U.S. Democratic National Committee
2003-10-13

Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian met Monday with Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the U.S. Democratic National Committee.

Noting that McAuliffe has served as the national financial chairman for the re-election bids of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore in 1996, Chen lauded him as one of the most powerful men behind the scenes and added that he is interested in finding out more about how McAuliffe earned his reputation as "the greatest fund-raiser in American history."

The president also welcomed proposed trips to Taiwan by Gore and Clinton. Gore is slated to arrive in Taiwan Tuesday to give a speech at an international conference in Taipei, while Clinton will visit the country on an as-yet unspecified day.

As McAuliffe also chairs a committee for the building of a library in Clinton's honor, Chen told McAuliffe that the Taiwan government would like to do something for the library.
