Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian on Wednesday expressed approval for the Taiwan District of Kiwanis International's recent name change from the "Republic of China District of Kiwanis International."

President Chen met with visiting international executive director of Kiwanis International, Eddie Sigurosson, at the Presidential Office where he offered his appreciation to the organization for its support to the Taiwan-affiliated chapter regarding the name change.

Chen said the name change is of great significance for both the Taiwan District of Kiwanis International as well as all the people of Taiwan in terms of identity.

The president also expressed his admiration for Kiwanis International -- which he described as a thriving organization of service- and community-minded individuals who support children and young adults around the world -- for choosing to hold its annual general meeting in Taiwan in 2001.

On behalf of the Taiwan District of Kiwanis International, Chen made a donation of US$100,000 to Kiwanis International to help out with the organization's humanitarian aid efforts around the world.

According to Chen, the Taiwan District of Kiwanis International has donated more than US$3.5 million to Kiwanis International for humanitarian assistance worldwide.

For his part, Sigurosson said that it was his pleasure to assist Taiwan in hosting the 2001 Kiwanis International general meeting, adding that he admires Taiwan's economic prowess and its people's compassion shown to other peoples around the world.

Sigurosson offered his appreciation for Taiwan's fresh donation, which he said will be used to serve the children of the world.
