Vice President Lu Meets with U.S. Maryland University President C.D. Mote, Jr.

Taipei, Nov. 6 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu met with visiting U.S. Maryland University President C.D. Mote, Jr. Thursday at the Presidential Office to exchange views on various issues of mutual concern.

During the meeting, Lu voiced the hope that Mote's visit will be conducive to closer bilateral academic exchanges.

Noting that Taiwan regards education as a sector worthy of investment, Lu said she is confident that local universities are willing to boost academic cooperation with Maryland University.

Lu told her guest that based upon its "soft power, " which she described as human rights, democracy, peace, love and high technology, Taiwan has made impressive achievements in various fields over the past five decades.

The vice president also asked for Mote's support for her idea of establishing a Democratic Pacific Union with the aim of promoting democracy and peace in the region.

For his part, Mote said that his university maintains good relations with Taiwan and is willing to act as a bridge for the boosting of substantive exchanges and mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and Taiwan.
