2003-11-12

Taipei, Nov. 12 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu received a group of visiting Australian women parliamentarians at the Presidential Office Wednesday.

During the meeting, Lu told her guests that the economic and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Australia have been increasing and that she hoped the visit of the Australian parliamentarians to Taiwan will further enhance bilateral ties.

Lu also pointed out the active participation in the political field by Taiwan women not only mentioning her own experience, but saying that there are 43 women legislators in the 223-member legislature and one-fourth of the Cabinet members are women.

In response, the Australian parliamentarians pledged to continue to promote Canberra-Taipei relations.

They said that the pro-Taiwan group of the Australian parliament has now 94 members, constituting the largest subgroup of the parliament.

They also thanked Taiwan for the relief it extended recently to help victims of a devastating fire in Canberra.

Members of the Australian parliamentarian group include Teresa Gambaro, Meg Lees, and Sharon Grierson.
