Vice President Lu Meets with Iruan Ergui Wu to Show Her Concern
2003-11-20

Kaohsiung, Nov. 20 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu traveled to the southern port city of Kaohsiung Thursday to meet with Iruan Ergui Wu, the Taiwanese-Brazilian boy at the center of an international custody battle.

Lu said she decided to meet with Wu to show her concern about his well-being after the Supreme Court ruled last week that the 8-year-old orphan's Brazilian grandmother is his sole legal guardian.

Lu said that although the Supreme Court ruling is legal, many provisions of the nation's Civil Code regarding children's rights and guardianship do not meet international standards. "As far as children's rights and guardianship are concerned, there is still ample room for discussion and improvement, " Lu said, adding that children's personal desires and interests should be given more emphasis in handling custody cases.

While celebrating the Nov. 20 World Children's Rights Day, Lu said, Taiwan should consider updating its Civil Code to better protect children's' basic human rights and interests.
