President Chen Receives Jens Hald Madsen, a Lawmaker And Chairman of the Danish Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee
2003-11-21

Taipei, Nov. 21 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian expressed his appreciation Friday to a visiting Danish lawmaker for his long-term support of the Republic of China's bid to enter the World Health Organization and other international organs, as well as for his plan to form a caucus friendly toward Taiwan in the Danish parliament.

The president made the remarks when he received Jens Hald Madsen, a lawmaker and chairman of the Danish parliament's Foreign Policy Committee, and his younger brother Per Hald Madsen, a lawyer.

Chen noted that Denmark's Liberal Party is one of the oldest political parties in Europe, and that Madsen, although only 35, is a very influential lawmaker in the party.

He also said that trade exchanges between the two nations are close, with bilateral trade last year amounting to more than US$457 million, with Taiwan enjoying a small trade surplus.

Chen noted that Denmark excels in industrial design, wind-generated electricity, biotechnology and medical health, all of which Taiwan can learn from. Both sides have plenty of room for further exchanges and cooperation, he added.

He expressed the hope that he will one day be able to step on Danish soil and visit other European countries, either in transit or as a visitor.

Madsen for his part said that he felt during his last visit to Taiwan the island was his "second home, " as there are many things in common between the two nations. Both are small and share the same values and ideals of democracy, freedom and human rights, he said.

Although it has encountered numerous difficulties, Taiwan has achieved an economy and democracy that are the envy of the world, and Madsen said he and his brother are proud of Taiwan and see themselves as its ambassadors in Denmark.

Madsen said that judging from the organization of a Taiwan caucus and the consensus reached by the Danish government and European Union members on Taiwan issues, bilateral relations between Taiwan and Denmark are increasing.

He also expressed the hope that Taiwan businesses will establish offices in his country to enhance bilateral trade.
