The Human Rights Advisory Committee under the Presidential Office Organizes a Seminar on Labor Rights
2003-05-01

Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu said Thursday that Taiwan should step up exchanges and cooperation with foreign governments and non-government organizations (NGOs) to further upgrade its human rights development and protection.

Lu made the remarks at a seminar on labor rights organized by a Presidential Office human rights advisory task force in celebration of May 1 Labor Day.

Amid the current wave of economic globalization, Lu said, Taiwan should not only take part in international trading and economic activities but should also intensify its international interaction in the human rights field.

While Taiwan has made progress in its human rights protection, Lu said, there is still ample room for Taiwan to upgrade its human rights protection.

She said it is her great hope that the Legislative Yuan can pass into law several critical bills to upgrade Taiwan's human rights protection to international standards. Those regulations include three bills regarding labor rights and the National Human Rights Commission organization statute.

Those bills have long been referred to the legislature for approval, Lu said, adding that the legislature should accelerate their screening. Once the organization law is enacted, Lu said, a national human rights commission can be set up to push for realization of the goal of making Taiwan a "human rights nation."
