Vice President Lu Presides over a News Conference to Mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
2003-11-25

Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu on Tuesday urged the public to pay attention to domestic violence, saying that the problem is even more frightening than the outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) that hit Taiwan earlier this year.

The vice president made the remarks at a news conference to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which falls on Nov. 25.

Lu said that reports by the Ministry of the Interior showed that the number of sexual assault cases averages eight per day, while nearly 100 cases of domestic violence are reported every day, which she said is more fearsome than SARS, the atypical pneumonia that gripped Taiwan between March and June of this year. "Domestic violence is often not out in the open, and the victims are often reeling and crying in the dark," she said.
