Taipei, Nov. 29 (CNA) Under the government's "Challenge 2008" program, the telecommunications industry is expected to become the country's third industry to reach production value of over a trillion new Taiwan dollars (US$29.4 billion), President Chen Shui-bian said Saturday.

Presiding over the opening of the 2003-2004 Information Technology Month, a trade show of the local information industry, Chen said the "M-Taiwan" program is part of his administration's Ten New Major Construction Projects to be carried out over the next five years.

Under the "M-Taiwan" program, the president said, the government will push the introduction and integration of wireless broadband technology, with one of the aims of the program being to see five million wireless Internet users in Taiwan by the year 2008.

The program will help the telecommunications industry become Taiwan's third industry, after the semiconductor industry and the display industry, to reach a production value of over one trillion new Taiwan dollars.
