Taipei, Dec. 1 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Monday that he has advocated a policy of taking care of veteran servicemen and their dependents.

The president made the remarks when he received Evlyn McCune, national president of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States.

Chen said that he recently met for the fifth time with the national president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and was very pleased to meet with the head of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW.

Chen noted that the VFW was established in 1899 and has a membership of 2.5 million. The Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW has 700,000 members, and the Republic of China's Vocational Assistance Commission for Retired Servicemen has maintained close exchanges with the two organizations over the years.

He said that the commission has spared no efforts in the care of veterans and their dependents and that since he assumed the presidency, he has advocated the policy of "safety for servicemen" and care for their dependents and veterans.

McCune said that her organization's major task is to do its utmost to assist veterans and their dependents and to provide them with assistance in times of need, as concern and care for survivors is the best way to honor the fallen.
