Vice President Lu Attends the Sixth Regional Symposium of the Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology
2003-12-01

Kaohsiung, Dec. 1 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu said on Monday that Taiwan should use its "soft power" based on peace, democracy and prosperity to replace hegemony based on predatoriness and invasion.

Lu made the remarks when she was invited to speak at the Sixth Regional Symposium of the Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.

Lu noted that the Pacific is the largest ocean in the world, and the population of the Pacific Rim nations accounts for 40 percent of the world's population. The region also has rich resources, with its fish catch accounting for 45 percent of the world's total.

The combined strength of the Pacific Rim countries is rising, Lu said, adding that the stability of the Pacific region will directly affect the peaceful development of the world.
